Measurement — Inches, Feet, and Centimeters

Memory Verse "Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?" — Isaiah 40:12 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn to measure objects using inches, feet, and centimeters, and understand that God designed a world we can measure and explore.

Lesson Content

Measurement helps us find out how long, tall, or wide something is. We use tools like rulers and tape measures to measure things.

An inch is a small unit of measurement — about the length of a paper clip. A foot is 12 inches — about the length of a large ruler. A centimeter is even smaller than an inch.

To measure something, place the end of the ruler at one edge of the object. Read the number where the other edge ends. That tells you how long the object is.

God measured the whole universe when He created it! Isaiah 40:12 tells us that God measured the waters and the heavens with His hand. Our measurements help us understand the amazing world He made.

Hands-On Activity

Use a ruler to measure 5 objects in your home or classroom. Write down each object's name and its length in inches. Then measure your hand span and your foot in inches.

Discussion Questions

  • Why is it important to measure things carefully?
  • What are some things you would measure in inches? In feet?
  • How does measuring things help us appreciate God's creation?
