Telling Time — Hours, Half Hours, and Quarter Hours

Memory Verse "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn to tell time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour using both analog and digital clocks.

Lesson Content

A clock has two hands. The short hand tells us the hour. The long hand tells us the minutes. When the long hand points to 12, it is exactly on the hour.

When the long hand points to 6, it is half past the hour (30 minutes). When the long hand points to 3, it is quarter past (15 minutes). When it points to 9, it is quarter to the next hour (45 minutes).

On a digital clock, time is shown with numbers. 3:00 means 3 o'clock. 3:30 means half past 3. 3:15 means quarter past 3.

God created time so that everything happens in the right order. The Bible tells us there is a time for everything — a time to work, a time to play, and a time to rest. Learning to tell time helps us use our days wisely.

Hands-On Activity

Draw a clock face and show these times: 2:00, 4:30, 7:15, and 10:45. Then keep a time log for one day, writing down what you do at each hour.
