2nd Grade Mathematics — Building with Numbers — Place Value and Measurement
Students will learn to subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping (borrowing) and solve subtraction word problems.
Sometimes when we subtract, the top digit in the ones place is smaller than the bottom digit. When that happens, we need to borrow from the tens place.
Let's try 52 - 27. We cannot take 7 from 2, so we borrow 1 ten from the 5 tens. Now we have 4 tens and 12 ones. 12 - 7 = 5 ones. 4 - 2 = 2 tens. So 52 - 27 = 25!
Borrowing is like sharing — we take from one place to help another place. God teaches us that sharing and helping one another is always a good thing.
Word problem: Sarah had 43 apples from her family's orchard. She gave 18 apples to her neighbors. How many does she have left? 43 - 18 = 25 apples.
Practice these subtraction problems: 61 - 24, 83 - 45, 70 - 33, 54 - 29, and 92 - 56. Then write your own word problem using subtraction with regrouping.
