Magnet Exploration — Discovering God's Invisible Forces

Memory Verse "He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." — Colossians 1:17 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will experiment with magnets to discover how God created invisible forces that hold things together.

Lesson Content

Did you know that there are invisible forces all around us? God created magnets with a special power that can push and pull certain objects without even touching them! This invisible force is called magnetism.

Magnets attract objects made of iron and steel. If you hold a magnet near a paper clip, the paper clip will jump right to the magnet! But if you hold a magnet near a wooden block or a piece of paper, nothing happens. God designed magnetism to work only with certain materials.

Magnets also have two ends called poles — a north pole and a south pole. If you put two north poles together, they push apart. But if you put a north and a south pole together, they snap together! God's invisible forces are amazing and help hold our whole world together.

Hands-On Activity

Use a magnet to test at least 10 objects around the classroom. Sort the objects into two groups: 'Attracted to Magnet' and 'Not Attracted to Magnet.' Draw a chart showing your results. Then try pushing two magnets together and pulling them apart.

Discussion Questions

  • Which objects stuck to the magnet? What were they made of?
  • Can you see magnetism? How do you know it is real?
  • How is God like an invisible force that holds everything together?
