Building a Bird Feeder — Caring for God's Creatures

Memory Verse "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them." — Matthew 6:26 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will build a simple bird feeder to practice caring for God's creation and learn how God provides for all His creatures.

Lesson Content

Jesus told us to look at the birds! He said that God feeds every single bird, even though birds do not plant gardens or store food in barns. If God takes care of the birds, how much more will He take care of us?

God created many different kinds of birds on Day 5 of Creation. Some birds eat seeds, some eat insects, and some eat fruit. God designed each bird with the perfect beak for the food it eats. Cardinals have strong beaks for cracking seeds, and hummingbirds have long beaks for sipping nectar from flowers.

Today we will build bird feeders to help care for the birds in our neighborhood. When we feed the birds, we are being good stewards of God's creation. We are helping God take care of His wonderful creatures!

Hands-On Activity

Spread peanut butter on a pine cone or empty toilet paper roll. Roll it in birdseed until it is fully covered. Tie a string to the top and hang it from a tree branch outside. Watch for birds that come to eat and draw the birds you see.
