Building a Rain Gauge — Measuring God's Gift of Rain

Memory Verse "He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." — Matthew 5:45 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will build a simple rain gauge to measure rainfall and learn how God sends rain as a blessing to water the Earth.

Lesson Content

Rain is one of God's wonderful gifts! God designed the water cycle to bring rain to the Earth. Water from oceans, lakes, and rivers evaporates up into the sky, forms clouds, and then falls back down as rain. God's design keeps water moving so that plants, animals, and people always have what they need.

The Bible tells us that God sends rain on the Earth as a blessing. Rain waters the crops that give us food, fills the rivers and lakes where animals drink, and makes flowers and trees grow. Without rain, nothing on Earth could survive.

Today we will build our own rain gauge to measure how much rain falls. Scientists use rain gauges to study weather, and we can use ours to see how much water God sends to our neighborhood. This helps us appreciate God's faithful provision!

Hands-On Activity

Take a clear plastic bottle and cut off the top. Turn the top upside down and place it inside the bottle like a funnel. Use a ruler to mark measurements on the side with a permanent marker. Place your rain gauge outside before the next rain. After it rains, check how much water collected and record it.

Discussion Questions

  • Why is rain important for plants and animals?
  • What would happen if it never rained?
  • How does the water cycle show God's wise design?
