Shadow Art — Playing with God's Light

Memory Verse "And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light." — Genesis 1:3 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will explore light and shadows to discover how God created light and how shadows are formed.

Lesson Content

On the very first day of creation, God said 'Let there be light!' and light appeared. Light is one of the first things God made because it is so important!

When light shines on an object, it makes a shadow on the other side. A shadow is a dark shape that happens because the object blocks the light. Your body makes a shadow when you stand in the sunshine!

Shadows can be big or small. When the light is close, the shadow is big. When the light is far away, the shadow is small. Shadows change shape when you move!

Today we will make art using shadows. We will trace shadows and create fun shadow pictures. God's light makes it all possible!

Hands-On Activity

On a sunny day, go outside and trace your shadow with chalk on the sidewalk. Try making funny shapes with your arms and legs! Then use a flashlight indoors to make shadow puppets on the wall with your hands. Can you make a bird, a dog, or a rabbit? Trace the shadows of small toys on paper.
