Birds — Designed to Fly

Memory Verse "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them." — Matthew 6:26 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn about the amazing design features of birds and how they point to an intelligent Creator.

Lesson Content

On Day 5 of Creation, God made birds to fill the skies. Every bird has feathers, wings, and a beak — and each of these is an amazing example of God's brilliant design. Feathers are lightweight but incredibly strong, keeping birds warm and helping them fly.

God designed different birds for different purposes. Eagles have sharp eyes that can spot a rabbit from over a mile away. Hummingbirds can flap their wings 80 times per second and hover in the air like tiny helicopters. Penguins have special waterproof feathers and can swim through icy water. Each bird is perfectly designed for where it lives!

Birds also have hollow bones that make them light enough to fly. This is not something that happened by accident — it is a brilliant design by our Creator God. When we see a bird soaring through the sky, we can thank God for His wonderful creation.

Hands-On Activity

Go outside or look out a window and observe birds for 10 minutes. Draw two different birds you see and write down how they are different from each other (color, size, beak shape).

Discussion Questions
