Bible Vocabulary — Learning Special Words from Scripture

Memory Verse "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." — 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn important vocabulary words found in the Bible and practice using context clues to figure out word meanings.

Lesson Content

The Bible uses some special words that we might not hear every day. Learning these words helps us understand God's Word better.

Here are some important Bible words: 'Grace' means a gift we don't deserve. 'Mercy' means not getting a punishment we do deserve. 'Faith' means believing in something we cannot see. 'Righteousness' means doing what is right in God's eyes.

When you come across a word you don't know, look at the words around it for clues. This is called using context clues. For example: 'The Lord is compassionate and shows kindness to everyone.' The word 'kindness' helps us understand that 'compassionate' means caring and kind.

Building your vocabulary is like filling a toolbox. The more words you know, the more tools you have to understand what you read and to share your thoughts with others!

Hands-On Activity

Create a Bible vocabulary dictionary. Write each word (grace, mercy, faith, righteousness, compassion, covenant) on its own page. Write the meaning, draw a picture, and use the word in a sentence.
