Independence Day — America Becomes Free

Memory Verse "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." — Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn about the Declaration of Independence and how America became a free nation under God.

Lesson Content

By 1776, the American colonists knew they needed to be free from England's unfair rule. Leaders from all 13 colonies came together in Philadelphia to decide what to do.

A man named Thomas Jefferson wrote an important paper called the Declaration of Independence. It said that all people are created equal and that God gives everyone the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

On July 4, 1776, the leaders signed the Declaration of Independence. America was now a free country! The Liberty Bell rang out to announce the good news. That is why we celebrate the Fourth of July every year.

The Founders believed that our rights come from God, not from a king or government. They trusted God to help them build a new nation where people could worship freely and live in liberty. America was truly 'one nation under God' from the very beginning.

Hands-On Activity

Color a picture of the American flag and the Liberty Bell. Write 'July 4, 1776' on your paper. Practice saying, 'All men are created equal.'
