Weather Station — Tracking God's Weather Patterns

Memory Verse "God's voice thunders in marvelous ways; He does great things beyond our understanding." — Job 37:5 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will build simple weather instruments and learn how God controls the weather and uses it to provide for His creation.

Lesson Content

God is in charge of the weather! The Bible tells us that God sends the rain, directs the wind, makes the snow fall, and causes the thunder to rumble. Every kind of weather is under God's control and serves a purpose in His creation.

Weather is what is happening in the air around us. It includes temperature (how hot or cold it is), precipitation (rain, snow, or hail), wind (how fast the air is moving), and clouds (what kind and how many). Scientists who study weather are called meteorologists.

Today we will make our own weather station with simple instruments to track the weather. We will make a wind vane to see which direction the wind blows and a cloud chart to identify different types of clouds. Observing the weather helps us see God's amazing design in action every single day!

Hands-On Activity

Make a wind vane using a straw, a pencil with an eraser, and a pin. Cut an arrow point and tail from cardstock and attach them to the straw. Push the pin through the middle of the straw into the eraser. Place it outside and record which direction the wind blows each day for a week. Also create a cloud chart by drawing and labeling cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds.

Discussion Questions
