Sight Words — Words to Know by Heart

Memory Verse "Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds." — Deuteronomy 11:18 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will recognize and read common sight words that appear frequently in texts.

Lesson Content

Some words are so common that we need to know them by sight — just by looking at them! These are called sight words.

Here are important sight words: the, and, is, was, said, have, you, are, they, were, come, from, one, what, your, there, could, would, into, look.

Many sight words appear in the Bible too! 'And God said' uses three sight words: 'and,' 'said.' When you know these words, reading becomes much easier.

Hands-On Activity

Make flashcards for 10 sight words. Practice reading them quickly. Then find and circle sight words in this Bible verse: 'And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.'
