Consonant Blends — Letters Working Together

Memory Verse "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." — Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will recognize and read words with consonant blends at the beginning and end of words.

Lesson Content

Just like friends work together, some letters work together too! When two consonants blend their sounds, we call it a consonant blend.

Beginning blends: 'bl' in 'bless,' 'cr' in 'cross,' 'gr' in 'grace,' 'pr' in 'pray,' 'st' in 'star,' 'tr' in 'trust.'

Ending blends: 'nd' in 'kind,' 'nk' in 'think,' 'st' in 'fast,' 'mp' in 'lamp.' Say each sound together quickly to make the blend!

Hands-On Activity

Circle the blends in these words: frog, stop, plan, lamp, gift, bless, cross, trust. Then draw pictures for four of the words and label them.
