Growing a Seed — Watching God's Design Unfold

Memory Verse "Then God said, 'Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees.'" — Genesis 1:11 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will plant a seed in a cup and observe how God designed plants to grow from tiny seeds into living things.

Lesson Content

On Day 3 of Creation, God made all the plants, trees, and flowers. He designed every seed with everything it needs to grow into a plant. Isn't that amazing?

A tiny seed holds a big plan inside! God gave seeds a special coat to protect them. When a seed gets water, soil, and sunlight, it begins to sprout. First a root grows down, then a stem pushes up toward the light.

Today we will plant our own seeds and watch God's design at work. Just like God takes care of every plant, He takes care of us too. We can trust Him to help us grow, just like He helps our seeds grow!

Hands-On Activity

Plant a bean seed in a clear plastic cup with damp soil. Place it near a window. Draw a picture of your seed in the cup and predict what it will look like in one week. Check your plant each day and draw what you see.

Discussion Questions

  • What does a seed need to grow?
  • How is God's care for plants like His care for us?
  • What do you think will happen to your seed this week?
