6th Grade Life Skills — Foundations for Life — Building Good Habits God's Way
Honoring God by Taking Good Care of Your Physical Health and Appearance
Personal hygiene means the daily habits that keep your body clean, healthy, and presentable. These habits include bathing, brushing your teeth, washing your hands, wearing clean clothes, and grooming your hair. While these may seem like basic tasks, they are an important part of caring for the body God gave you.
Good hygiene is not about vanity or trying to impress people. It is about stewardship. When you take care of your body, you show respect for God's creation, you protect your health, and you show consideration for the people around you.
A good daily hygiene routine includes showering or bathing regularly, using soap to clean your body, and washing your hair. As you enter your preteen years, your body is changing, and you may notice that you sweat more and develop body odor. Using deodorant becomes an important part of your daily routine.
Washing your hands is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay healthy. You should wash your hands before eating, after using the restroom, after touching animals, and after coughing or sneezing. Use warm water and soap, and scrub for at least 20 seconds.
Brushing your teeth at least twice a day — morning and night — protects your teeth from cavities and keeps your breath fresh. Flossing daily removes food particles that your toothbrush cannot reach. Regular dental checkups help catch problems early.
Grooming also includes keeping your hair clean and combed, trimming your nails, and wearing clean, appropriate clothing. These habits may seem small, but they make a big difference in how you feel about yourself and how others perceive you. Taking pride in your appearance — without becoming vain — is part of presenting yourself well as a representative of Christ.
In the Old Testament, God gave the Israelites detailed instructions about cleanliness (Leviticus 11-15). While Christians are not under these ceremonial laws, the principle behind them remains: God cares about how we treat our bodies. Cleanliness honors God and shows that we value what He has given us.
Good hygiene also shows love for others. When you keep yourself clean, you are being considerate of the people around you — your family, classmates, and friends. It is a practical way to follow the command to love your neighbor as yourself.
Write thoughtful responses to the following questions. Use evidence from the lesson text, Scripture references, and primary sources to support your answers.
