Star Map — Charting God's Heavens

Memory Verse "He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name." — Psalm 147:4 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will create a star map showing major constellations and learn how God placed the stars in the sky with purpose and order.

Lesson Content

On Day 4 of creation, God made the stars and set them in the sky. The Bible tells us that He knows every single star by name! There are billions of stars in the universe, and each one was placed by God's hand.

A constellation is a group of stars that forms a pattern or picture in the night sky. People have been naming constellations for thousands of years. Some well-known constellations include Orion the Hunter, the Big Dipper, and the Southern Cross.

Star maps help us find constellations in the sky. Different constellations are visible during different seasons because the Earth moves around the sun throughout the year. A star map shows which constellations you can see during each season.

The stars have been used for navigation throughout history. Sailors used the North Star, called Polaris, to find their way across the ocean. Just as the stars guide travelers, God's Word guides us through life.

Hands-On Activity

Create a star map on black poster board using white and silver paint or stickers for stars. Plot at least five major constellations: Orion, the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper, Cassiopeia, and Leo. Connect the stars with lines and label each constellation. Use a constellation guide to help you place them accurately.

Discussion Questions

  • Which constellation was your favorite to draw? Why?
  • How did people in the past use stars to navigate?
  • What does Psalm 147:4 tell us about God's knowledge and power?
