The First Thanksgiving — Giving Thanks to God

Memory Verse "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name." — Psalm 100:4 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn about the first Thanksgiving celebration and how the Pilgrims gave thanks to God for His blessings.

Lesson Content

After a long, hard winter, the Pilgrims had a wonderful harvest in the fall of 1621. Their corn, beans, and squash grew well because Squanto had taught them how to farm in the new land.

The Pilgrims were so grateful to God that they decided to have a special feast to give Him thanks. They invited their Native American friends, including Chief Massasoit and about 90 of his people.

The celebration lasted for three whole days! They ate turkey, deer, corn, and many other foods. But most importantly, they prayed and thanked God for keeping them alive and giving them food.

This celebration is what we remember as the first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims knew that everything good comes from God. They wanted to praise Him for His blessings and provision.

Hands-On Activity
