2nd Grade Civics & Government — Our Nation — Symbols, Laws, and Freedom
Students will learn about the American flag, what its colors and parts mean, and how to show respect for our flag.
The American flag is one of the most important symbols of our country. It is red, white, and blue. Each color has a special meaning: red stands for bravery, white stands for purity and goodness, and blue stands for justice and loyalty.
Our flag has 50 white stars on a blue background. Each star represents one of the 50 states in our country. The flag also has 13 red and white stripes. These stripes represent the 13 original colonies that became the first states.
We show respect for our flag in many ways. We stand when the flag passes by in a parade. We put our hand over our heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. We never let the flag touch the ground.
Our flag reminds us that America is a nation blessed by God. When we see the flag, we can thank God for our wonderful country and the freedom He has given us.
Color an American flag. Count the 50 stars and 13 stripes. Practice placing your hand over your heart the way you do during the Pledge of Allegiance.
