Volcano Model — Exploring God's Powerful Earth

Memory Verse "The mountains quake before Him, the hills melt away. The earth trembles at His presence." — Nahum 1:5 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will build a model volcano and observe a chemical reaction to learn about God's powerful design of the Earth.

Lesson Content

God created the Earth with incredible power inside! Deep below the ground, the Earth is very hot. Sometimes this heat builds up and pushes melted rock called lava through openings in the ground. These openings are called volcanoes.

Volcanoes remind us of God's awesome power. The Bible says that mountains quake and tremble before the Lord. God is so mighty that even the mountains respond to His presence! Volcanoes also help the Earth by creating new land and making soil rich for growing plants.

Today we will build our own model volcano and make it erupt using a simple chemical reaction. When baking soda and vinegar mix together, they create a fizzy eruption that looks like lava flowing out of a volcano. This helps us see a tiny picture of God's powerful creation!

Hands-On Activity

Build a small volcano shape using clay or playdough around a plastic cup. Place the volcano on a tray. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup, then pour in vinegar mixed with red food coloring. Watch your volcano erupt! Draw a picture of your erupting volcano and label the parts.

Discussion Questions

  • What happened when the baking soda and vinegar mixed together?
  • How do volcanoes show God's power?
  • What good things can volcanoes do for the Earth?
