Short Vowel Sounds — A, E, I, O, U

Learning Objective

Students will identify and produce short vowel sounds in simple words.

Lesson Content

Every word has vowels! The vowels are A, E, I, O, and U. Today we will learn their short sounds.

Short A says 'ah' like in 'cat' and 'man.' Short E says 'eh' like in 'red' and 'hen.' Short I says 'ih' like in 'sit' and 'fish.'

Short O says 'ah' like in 'dog' and 'God.' Short U says 'uh' like in 'sun' and 'cup.' These sounds help us read many words in the Bible!

Hands-On Activity

Sort picture cards into five groups by their short vowel sound. Practice reading these CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words: cat, bed, pig, log, bus, map, pet, kid, box, rug.

  • What are the five vowels?
  • Can you think of a Bible word with a short vowel sound?
  • What sound does the letter 'a' make in the word 'man'?
